About Sunny by Kimberly

Experience, Caregiving & a Desire to Help

Welcome to Sunny by Kimberly, a place created from both professional experience and a deeply personal caregiving journey.

I’m Kimberly, an occupational therapist with more than 25 years of experience across acute care and rehabilitation, home health, pediatrics, and school-based occupational therapy. I began my career working primarily on neuro, trauma, and ICU floors before later transitioning to home health and the educational setting.

Throughout my career, I’ve seen how the right support, equipment, routines, and simple adaptations can make everyday life safer, more manageable, and more meaningful.

But when Lewy body dementia entered my own family, I experienced caregiving from an entirely different perspective—not just as an occupational therapist, but as a daughter.

My Mom’s Journey With Lewy Body Dementia

My mom was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia in 2020.

Over the years that followed, I walked alongside her through the many challenges and changes that can accompany this disease, including sleep disturbances and night terrors, visual hallucinations, fluctuations in thinking and alertness, and sensitivity to certain medications.

My mom was the rock of our family. She was also a registered nurse who spent her career caring for others in acute care, doctors’ offices, and dementia nursing facilities. Eventually, the roles changed, and it became our turn to care for her.

Together, our family was able to keep my mom at home throughout her journey. She transitioned to hospice care at home in January 2026 and passed away on February 23, 2026.

Caring for her changed the way I understand caregiving—and the way I think about what families truly need when they are navigating aging, dementia, and everyday life at home.

Why I Created Sunny by Kimberly

My professional background helped me problem-solve throughout my mom’s journey, but being her daughter and caregiver taught me things no textbook or clinical setting ever could.

Sunny by Kimberly grew from both of those experiences.

Here I share practical caregiving information, meaningful activities, healthy-aging ideas, helpful products, printables, and everyday solutions that may make life a little easier for older adults and the people who care for them.

Some of the products and resources I share are things I personally used while caring for my mom. Others are recommendations informed by my occupational therapy experience and their potential usefulness for caregivers, older adults, and families.

My hope is simple: that something I learned during my more than 25 years as an occupational therapist—or while walking alongside my mom—can help another person feel a little more prepared, supported, or encouraged.

Thank you for being here and for allowing me to share a little of our story. I hope you’ll find something at Sunny by Kimberly that helps, encourages, or simply makes your day a little brighter.

Warmly,
Kimberly Orlando, MOT, OTR/L
